Designing the Pacawood cast: characters with a point of view
Bhide the Guardian of Discipline. Jethalal the Courageous Adventurer. A cast isn't a set of models — it's a set of opinions. Here's our character pipeline from silhouette to rigged asset.
A character roster fails when every character is equally reasonable. Bhide — the Guardian of Discipline — works as a design because he has an opinion: rules exist for a reason, and he's the reason. When our cast members each carry a stance like that, players can tell them apart from across the room, before they read a single stat.
Step one: the silhouette test
Every Pacawood cast character starts as a black silhouette on a flat background. If we can't name the character from the outline alone, the design goes back. Bhide's upright, armor-heavy frame reads completely differently from Jethalal's forward-leaning adventurer posture — and that difference has to survive without color, detail, or face.
Step two: one shape language per character
- Bhide — vertical rectangles. Discipline is orthogonal.
- Babita Ji — sweeping curves and forward motion. The Fearless Explorer is always leaning somewhere.
- Jethalal — asymmetric, restless angles. The Courageous Adventurer never stands still even in a turnaround.
- Mehta Sahab — layered, calculated planes. The Master Strategist reveals new shapes as you orbit him.
- Dr. Iyer — clean circles and precise symmetry. The Brilliant Scientist is the calm center of the cast.
When the whole cast stands together, those shape languages make each character pop — and give animators a natural vocabulary for how each one moves.
Step three: high-to-low, then rig
The sculpts are built high-res first, then retopologized to game meshes with clean edge flow around the deformation zones — shoulders, hips, neck. PBR texture sets follow: albedo, normal, roughness, metallic, AO. Every character ships with the same material structure so lighting behaves consistently when they share a scene.
See for yourself
The full cast — Bhide, Babita Ji, Jethalal, Mehta Sahab, and Dr. Iyer — is in our 3D showcase, rendered live in your browser. Orbit them. That's the point of game-ready: the asset should survive being looked at from every angle.
